#6 Middlebury upends Owls 81-53

Box Score

MIDDLEBURY, VT.1/29/13 – Middlebury College made sure history didn't repeat itself on Tuesday night.  Almost a year to the day of Keene State's 77-76 upset win over then-top-ranked Middlebury College, the now sixth- ranked Panthers revenged the loss with a 81-53 non-conference victory at Pepin Gymnasium.

Bouncing back from its first loss of the season at Williams College on Saturday, Middlebury improves to 17-1.  Keene State, which came into the game with an 8-1 road record, falls to 11-8.

Senior Anthony Mariano (Naugatuck, Conn.) was the only Owl to finish in double-figures, scoring 10 points.  Senior Rashad Wright (Agawam, Mass.) pulled down 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

Seniors Jake Wolfin (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) and Peter Lynch (Westford, Mass.) and junior Joey Kizel (Short Hills, N.J.) each finished with 14 points for Middlebury, which shot a scorching 59% (33-56) from the field and 62% (8-13) from behind the arc.  Senior Nolan Thompson (Akron, Ohio) had a team high 10 rebounds.

On the prowl from the start of the game, the Panthers used an 11-0 run to open up a 28-11 after Wolfin banked home a three-pointer at the 9:28 mark. Wolfin hit a jumper at the buzzer, stretching Middlebury's lead to 38-20 at the half.

Keene State was never able to get back in the game in the second half.  Sophomore Hunter Merryman (Marino, Ca.) just beat the shot clock, knocking down a three-pointer to put Middlebury up 49-25 at the 13:30 mark.

The Owls lost the battle of the boards 37-33, allowing 17 offensive rebounds.

Keene State struggled from behind the three-point line, going 3-14 (21%) and attempted only six free throws, hitting four of them.

Keene State returns home for a non-conference game against St. Joseph's College of Vermont on Thursday (7 p.m.).
