Owls open up track season at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, MASS. 12/7/13 – The Keene State College men's and women's track teams opened up their indoor season at the Smith College Winter Classic on Saturday in Northampton, Mass.

An All-America in the mile last season, senior Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine) won the mile (4:19.77) and the 3,000 races (8:49.20) at Smith.  The Owls swept the mile with classmates Chris Plankey (Bristol, N.H.) taking second (4:23.68) and Brett Mastrangelo (Millis, Mass.) finishing third (4:24.83). Plankey also placed third in the 800 (2:02.94).

In other races, freshman Patrick Chabot (Derry, N.H.) won the 1,000 (2:41.45).  Sophomore Devin Sanford (Holliston, Mass.) was second in the 200 (23.69) and third in the 400 (51.88).  Classmate Eric Dietz (Prospect, Conn.) was second in the 400 (51.59). Freshman Ryan Milewski (Ashland, Mass.) placed third in the 600 (1:26.00) and third in the 1,000 (2:47.91).

In field events, senior Dante Hill (Longmeadow, Mass.) won the shotput (46'-11.00") and junior Ben Keach (Newfield, N.H.) placed third with a throw of 44'-09.00.  Keach had a personal best throw of 46'-7.50" with his second place finish in the weight throw.  Sophomore DeVaughn Hill (Longmeadow, Mass.) was third (41-07.25"). 

Junior Kait Wheeler (Exeter, N.H.) posted a pair of first-place finishes for the KSC women's team, winning the 800 (2:25.52) and the mile (5:19.51).  Freshman Katelyn Terry (Stafford, N.H.) made an auspicious debut, winning the 600 (1:43.55) and taking second in the 1,000 (3:27.47). 

Senior Sarah DiTonno (Wakefield, Mass.) had a personal best throw with her fourth place finish (36'-05.75") in the shotput.
