Owls drop regular season finale to Rhode Island College 65-48

KEENE, N.H. 2/16/13 – The Keene State College women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale to R.I. College 65-48 in Little East Conference action at Spaulding Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Keene State (9-16, 3-11 LEC), which has dropped its last three games, will be the seventh seed in the upcoming LEC tournament and travel to Danbury, Conn. on Tuesday ( 6 p.m.) for a quarterfinal game against second seed Western Conn. State University.

Rhode Island College (15-10, 8-6 LEC) will be the fifth seed in the tournament and play at fourth seed Eastern Conn. in an opening-round game on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).

After a tough start, senior Siobhan Carnell (Quincy, Mass.) who was playing her final home game of her career, finished with 17 points to lead the Owls. Sophomore Christan Wojtas (Amherst, N.H.) also scored in double figures with 11 points.  Sophomore Rachael Brucks (Suwanne, Geo.) pulled down a team high seven rebounds.

A pair of seniors led RIC in scoring. Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) scored a game high 17 points and Courtney Burns (Rockland, Mass.) added 12 points while freshman Vandell Andrade (Providence, R.I.) grabbed a game high 12 rebounds to lead the Anchorwomen.

Keene State fell behind early and never recovered. The Owls struggled offensively at the start of the game, scoring just three points in the first 12 minutes as the Anchorwomen jumped out to a 17-3 lead.  O'Dell scored five straight points to extend RIC's lead to 24-6 at the 7:20 mark.

Keene State attempted to climb back in the game late in the first half. Wojtas knocked down a three-pointer to make it 26-13 with 3:35 to go.  .  The Owls went to the locker room trailing 32-15 at the half.

Held to one point in the first half, Carnell, the Owls top scorer, tallied nine straight points for KSC, cutting the lead to 47-31 at the 10:10 mark of the second half.

Keene State inched a littler close after freshman Ryanne Williams (Norwell, Mass.) hit a free throw to make it 48-35 with 8:24 to go. The Owls never got closer. Burns hit a jumper in the lane to push RIC's lead back up to 58-40 with 2:30 to play. 

Keene State had a tough shooting day, hitting just 17-56 (30%) from the field, including 3-13 (23%) from behind the arc. They were also 11-18 from the line (61%).

Rhode Island College controlled the boards 47-37, including 16 offensive rebounds.
