Owls pounce on Panthers 63-31

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 2/5/13 – The Keene State College women's basketball team snapped a four game losing streak with a decisive 63-31 Little East Conference win over rival Plymouth State University at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.

Eleven of Keene State's 12 active players scored at least one point for the Owls (8-13, 3-8 LEC).  Senior Siobhan Carnell (Quincy, Mass.) led a balanced Owl offense with a game high 18 points to go with six rebounds.  Eight of her points came at the foul line.

Junior Carly Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass.), sophomore Christan Wojtas (Amherst, N.H.) and freshman Kelsey Cognetta (Stamford, Conn.) each finished with eight points. Sophomore Courtney Roberts (Sutton, Mass.) pulled down a team high seven rebounds.

Senior Katie Seraikas (Concord, N.H.) finished with seven points and a game-high eight rebounds for Plymouth State (1-20, 0-11 LEC).

"It's nice to win at home against an in-state rival, but I think we're playing better defensively," said KSC Coach Keith Boucher.  "The kids are playing hard.  Were young and still do bad things at bad times, but I see improvement.  We're starting to mesh a little bit. "

The Owls didn't waste any time jumping out to a lead.  Following a steal by Cognetta, sophomore Rachael Brucks (Suwanee, Geo.) hit a short baseline jumper to give KSC an early 12-1 lead.

Later in the half, junior Brianna McCain (Hampton, N.H.) hit a left-handed lay-up of the glass to push the Owls lead up to 21-6 at the 5:12 mark.

In the closing seconds, Carnell, who had 11 first half points, drove the lane to put KSC up 30-14. Freshman Bry Bennett (Lancaster, N.H.) answered with a jumper at the buzzer to make it a 30-16 game at the half.  Keene State held Plymouth State to just five field goals in the first half.

Keene State extended its lead in the second half.  Grabbing an offensive rebound, Cognetta hit a lay-up to cap 12-2 run out of the break, giving Keene State a 42-18 lead at the 13:58 mark

The Owls, who lead the series in the LEC 26-10, have won 18 of the last 19 meetings between the two teams.

Keene State plays a non-conference game at Lasell College on Thursday (7 p.m.) while Plymouth State is at UMass-Boston on Saturday (1 p.m.).
