LACORSSE, WIS. 5/24/13 – Keene State College senior Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.) came up short in her bid to reach the finals of the 800-meter event at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Roger Harring Stadium on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse on Friday night.
Fitter, who suffered a stress fracture in her left foot four weeks ago and was unable to train properly for the race, gave it a gallant effort finishing fourth in her heat and 15th overall in the preliminaries with a time of 2:12.78.
"Maggie hung with the pack as best as she could," said KSC Coach Peter Thomas. It was a very fast field."
Fitter was looking to earn her third All-America honor. She was a member of the KSC distance medley relay team that placed third at the indoor championships her sophomore season. This winter, Fitter captured her second All-America award, finishing fourth in the 800.
"It was a great effort," said Thomas. "Maggie was pleased with her race. It says a lot about her character and determination."
Junior Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine) will be looking to capture his second All-America honor when he runs in the finals of the 1,500-meter race on Saturday.
