Owls spike Southern Vermont 3-0

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 9/17/13 – The Keene State College women's volleyball team had no problem improving its record to 6-5 on the season, sweeping Southern Vermont College 3-0 (25-8. 25-20 and 25-14) in a non-conference match played at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.

The Owls faced a much different Southern Vermont team than the one they went up against last season.  The Mountaineers not only lost several seniors from last year's regionally ranked squad, but also their coach who moved on to Potsdam (N.Y.) State. "They're young and they're also tiny and that was their downfall, "said KSC Coach Bob Weiner. "But they're a better volleyball team than some we've beaten this year."

Sophomore Madeline Nossif (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the Owls' offense with 12 kills and an impressive .529 hitting percentage.  Sophomores Christine Hadfield (Waterford, Conn.) and Angela Silveri (Poughquog, N.Y.) finished with nine and seven kills respectively.  Weiner liked the ball distribution of his team.  "Alexis (Michal) is an experienced setter and gets the ball to the right hitters," he said. "She knows how to run an offense."

Defensively, sophomore Kaitlin Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I.) had 11 digs while sophomore Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H.) finished with a season high 32 assists.

Junior Jessica Delgado (Los Angeles, Ca.) had seven kills, senior Vanessa Ruelas (Paramount, Ca.) added nine digs and sophomore Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Ca.) finished with 13 assists to lead Southern Vermont (3-5).

Keene State has a quick turnaround, traveling to River College on Thursday (7 p.m.). "Last year was the first time in my nine-year career they beat us," said Weiner.  "They lost a few key players and are down a level, but they have a good coach and they're a good team, so it should be an interesting match."
