Box Score KEENE, N.H. 1/9/14 – Playing its first home game in over a month, the Keene State College women's basketball team appeared right at home, rolling to a 108-62 non-conference win over Lasell College on Thursday night at Spaulding Gym.
It's the first time the Owls have gone over the century mark since defeating Lasell 101-46 in the 2004-05 season. KSC also scored 108 points in a 108-94 win over Plymouth State on Jan. 16, 2001 and it's the most points scored by the Owls since beating Rivier College 139-27 on Dec. 9, 1998.
"Obviously we shot the ball pretty well from the arc and I thought we moved the ball pretty well," said KSC Coach Keith Boucher. "It was nice to get a lot of people in the game."
Every one of the KSC team had at least one point in the game.
Winners of seven of its last eight games and four in a row, KSC improves to 8-3. Lasell (6-6) saw its three game winning streak come to an end.
Junior Christan Wojtas (Amherst, N.H.) scored a career high 26 points to lead the Owls. On fire from behind the arc, she knocked down eight three-pointers (8-10), coming one short of tying a KSC record by Mary Nesbit who had nine three-pointers against Sacred Heart back on Feb. 4, 1989. "I don't think about it. I just shoot the ball and hope it goes in every time," said Wojtas. "But I haven't a game like this since my JV year at Souhegan."
The Owls, who were draining threes all game, hit 12 of their 26 attempts (46%) from three-point land, three shy of the school record set of 15 treys against Longwood (Va.) College in 1988.
The Owls didn't waste any time jumping out to a lead. Wojtas found classmate Courtney Roberts (Sutton, Mass.) on an inbounds play for a lay-up that put Keene State up 16-4 at the 14:40 mark.
Wojtas, who had four treys and 14 points in the first half, hit a runner off the glass to make it 25-9. Minutes later, freshman Jovan Kingwood (Norwalk, Conn.), who had just entered the game, knocked down a three-pointer to give KSC its biggest lead of the half, 32-13 with 9:16 to go.
Taking advantage of its depth, the Owls continued their hot-shooting, taking a 47-30 lead to the locker room. KSC, which shot 55% from the field in the half, did a good job distributing the ball, collecting 13 assists on its 18 baskets.
KSC never let Lasell back in the game. The Owls scored the first nine points of the second half, going up 47-30 on a lay-up by senior Carly Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass.).
Later in the half, Wotjas canned her eighth three-pointer of the game, to make it 74-40.
Kiernan also finished in double figures with 16 points. Freshman Amanda Petrow (Methuen, Mass.) and Kiernan had a team high seven rebounds.
KSC shot 38-74 (51%) from the field and improved their free throw shooting, hitting 20 of its 23 attempts (87%).
Sophomore Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) led Lasell with 17 points.
Keene State won't have long to enjoy the win, it hosts Rhode Island College in a key Little East Conference game on Saturday (1 p.m.). "We have a huge game on Saturday, a very talented team in Rhode Island College, so we have our work cut out for us."
