Habelow's Late Winner Downs Westfield State

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Melissa Habelow's goal with 25 seconds left in regulation lifted the Keene State College field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Westfield State University in Little East Conference action at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.

The win was the ninth in a row for Keene State, who remain perfect at 9-0 in the Little East Conference, and an overall record of 13-4.  Westfield State drops to 6-8, with a 3-6 LEC mark.

A 1-1 game with 5:47 remaining turned into a thrilling finale with three goals in the last five minutes.

Keene State had taken a 24th minute lead when Marita Brothers converted a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the year, but Westfield State tied the game up just before halftime when Holly Brouillete finished off a scramble in the box for her 11th of the season.

KSC poured on the pressure after halftime, outshooting Westfield State 10-1 and taking 15 penalty corners to the visiting Owls' three in the second half.

Keene State was rewarded for their pressure in the 65th minute, when Sami Smith got the last touch on a ball in front of the cage to put KSC back up 2-1.  Just over two minutes later, Westfield State tied the score again, as Meg Doherty rifled in a shot that tipped off an Owl stick and past Meaghan Dwyer.

KSC made the last of those 15 second half corners count, with Haylie Dolan sending the ball in to Brothers, who laid it off for Habelow to smash in her eighth goal of the season and third game winner this year.

WSU goalie Megan Fountaine made nine saves in the Owls' net, while Dwyer, who picked up her ninth win of the year, made five stops.

KSC outshot Westfield State 21-8 on the night overall.

Keene State hosts Framingham State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the regular season home finale.  Before the game, the Owls will honor seniors Lauren Villanova, Marisa Lemoine, and Habelow.  Westfield State will welcome Salem State for a 7 p.m. start on October 24.
