Lemoine, Smith Lead Owls Past Western Conn. 2-0

DANBURY, CT — The Keene State College field hockey team scored late in the first half and early in the second to claim a 2-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University Saturday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Through the game's first 30 minutes, defense, goal tending, and physical play dominated, with Keene State taking nine of the game's first 10 shots, and earning five penalty corners to only one for Western.

With five minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Sami Smith scored an unassisted goal to give Keene State a narrow 1-0 advantage going into the locker room at intermission.

Western picked up the intensity on the offensive end to start the second half, but 10 minutes into the period, Keene State senior Marisa Lemoine took a pass from freshman Mariah Barnett and beat the Western keeper to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

For the game, Keene State held a 21-6 advantage in shots and also had a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. For the Owls, junior Meaghan Dwyer had three saves to earn the win. Kristy Trotta had 12 saves in goal, but suffers the loss. 

Keene State improves to 7-4, and 5-0 in the LEC. With the loss, Western's season record falls to 6-5 on the season, and 3-2 in the Little East Conference. The Owls continue LEC play Tuesday at 6pm when they host Salem St.
