Box Score KEENE, NH - The Keene State College women's basketball team suffered a 84-67 non-conference loss to No. 2 Amherst in their home opener played at Spaulding Gymnasium Tuesday night.
The Owls drop to 1-2 on the season while Amherst (1-0) picks up their first win of the 2014-15.
KSC kept things close with the Jeffs on a Christan Wojtas three to pull within 9-6 at the 16:23 mark. From that point on, Amherst put together a 21-4 run sparked by 10 points by Marley Giddins.
Amherst carried the momentum into the second half and jumped out to a commanding 27-point lead on Hannah Hackley's three point shot at 11:34, but the Owls regrouped and went on a 26-12 run over the next nine minutes capped off by Purcell's three.
The Owls (1-2) were led by Christan Wojtas who scored 15 points, all on three pointers, while freshman Sandi Purcell came off the bench to record 15 points, three rebounds and two steals. Kelsey Cognetta added seven points, four rebounds and three assists, while Sarah Kober led the Owls in rebounds with seven.
Giddins led the Jeffs in points and rebounds with 20 and eight respectively. Cheyenne Pritchard came off the bench and went 6-7 for 18 points, including four treys, while Meredith Doswell filled the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals
The Jeffs held the edge in rebounds 37-29, while shooting lights out hitting 50% of their shots (29-58) and connected on 11 3-pointers.
Keene State travels to Northampton, Mass. on Saturday to take on Smith College at 2 p.m.
