Owls Race Past Corsairs for Senior Day Victory

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. – The Keene State College women's basketball team sent their seniors out on a high with a 75-62 win the last game of the regular season.  KSC is now 13-12, and 5-9 in the Little East Conference, while the Corsairs fall to 15-10, and 8-6 in the LEC.

Senior Carly Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass.) scored 14 in a balanced Owls attack that saw four players reach double figures. Freshman Stephanie D'Annolfo (Tyngsborough, Mass.) had a career-high 16 rebounds to go with 10 points.

Meghan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) led all scorers with 17 points, to go along with 11 rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting.

The Owls gained several large leads in the first half, but the Corsairs were always up to the task closing the gaps.

Jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead on a Kiernan jumper, the Corsairs closed the gap to just one when a Meghan Koehane (Mansfield, Mass.) free throw brought the score to 15-14 Owls.

Later a Courtney Roberts layup with 2:20 brought the Owls lead to 30-22, and the Owls took a 31-25 lead into halftime.

The second half got off to a quick start as both teams came out of the locker room looking to push the tempo. The Corsairs tied the game at 37 at the 15:34 mark, then Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) hit a jumper with 14:02 remaining to give UMD their first lead of the game.

It was at that point sophomore Laurie Allien (Medford, Mass.) and freshman Jovan Kingwood (Norwalk, Conn.) really started to push the pace.  From 13:44 until 8:41, the two combined for 11 points, and outscored the Corsairs 11-10 on their own and gave KSC a 51-49 lead.

The Owls turned up the defense for the remainder of the game and held UMD to just 11 points over the last eight minutes, while Keene State scored 24 over that same time period. Kiernan scored nine points over the final eight minutes.

Keene State shot well from the floor all day, shooting 41% from two-point range and 42% from deep. They capitalized on 15 Corsair turnovers, scoring 19 second-chance points and 16 off of turnovers.

Keene State will play Eastern Connecticut State University on the road Tuesday in the first round of the Little East Conference Tournament. The Warriors swept the Owls in the regular season series.

UMass Dartmouth plays the fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University Colonials on the road Tuesday. West Conn swept the Corsairs in the regular season series.

Before the game, seniors Kiernan, Brianna McCain, and Vicky Vitale were honored.
