Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.--Morgan Fallon hit an RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Keene State College softball team to a 4-3 win over Plattsburgh State University on Sunday. The Owls fell to Wisconsin-Stout in the second game of the day, 8-1.
The Owls now sport a 1-1 record.
Plattsburgh State
Mariah Crisp scattered five hits over seven innings, striking out 14 as the Owls won in thrilling fashion. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of second when Samantha Capobianco homered down the left field line, but KSC responded with two runs in the bottom of the second. Heather Pelletier opened the frame with a walk, and moved to second when Catherine Tewell was hit by a pitch.
Katie Newell hit into a fielder's choice to leave runners on first and second with one out, and Molly Dussault singled through the left side to load the bases to set the table for Kayla Votto. Votto, who was making her collegiate debut, smacked a two-run single to right center to put KSC in front.
Crisp kept the Cardinals off the board until the seventh inning, retiring nine straight from the third to sixth innings and allowing just a bunt single during that stretch. Plattsburgh State did break through in the top of the seventh inning. A double from Shelby Heyward and a single from Samantha Tenney put two on with one out, and a Keene State error allowed pinch runner Natasha Schultz to score.
With the game tied at two, Nichole Chiarello hit an RBI single that put the Cardinals up 3-2 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Stephanie Long started the rally with a lead-off single, and Sara Bracken brought her home with a double down the left field line. Aliza Guerrero ran for Bracken and took third on a passed ball, setting the stage for Fallon's dramatics. After Anna Glassman walked, Fallon's second hit of the day brought home Guerrero with the winning run.
KSC recorded eight hits on the day, and took advantage of two Plattsburgh State errors.
Wisconsin-Stout
The Owls were limited to three hits in the second game, falling to Wisconsin-Stout 8-1. Freshman Ashlee McGan made her first career start and allowed just one earned run over four innings. Kellie Saunders relieved for the final two innings.
The Blue Devils scored first on Lyndzi Knudtson's sacrifice bunt, and added three more in the second inning thanks to two KSC errors and an RBI single from Kaitlin Stark.
Keene State broke up the shutout in the fifth innng. Elissa Coburn reached on an error and took second when Christy McGraw walked. Another Stout error loaded the bases, and Fallon smoked a single to left field to bring Coburn home. The threat ended when Rachel Boynton popped up to third base.
Wisconsin-Stout added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
Keene State will be in action on Monday, playing Frostburg State (Md.) at 5 p.m. and Utica at 7 p.m.
