Softball Falls To Bowdoin, Fairleigh-Dickinson

CLERMONT, Fla.--The Keene State College softball team lost a pair of games on the second day of play in Florida.  The Owls fell to Bowdoin College 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon, followed by a 5-2 defeat to Fairleigh-Dickinson-Florham later in the evening.

Keene State is now 1-3 this season.

Bowdoin

A pair of fifth inning errors led to four unearned runs for the Polar Bears.  KSC had taken a 1-0 lead early in the game when Stephanie Long led off the contest with a single and moved to second on Sara Bracken's sacrifice bunt.  Heather Pelletier plated Long with an RBI single through the left side.

The Owls held the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning.  Starter Mariah Crisp set down the first nine Bowdoin batters she faced and 12 of the first 13.  Bowdoin broke through in the bottom of the fifth, as Nicole Nelson reached on an error and moved all the way to third on a hit from Dimitria Spathakis.  After Spathakis stole second base, Tracy Shirey singled to left to bring in Nelson, and Adriane Krul followed with a double to left-center that brought home both runners.

Krul came home on a hit by Emily Griffin.  

KSC pulled one back in the top of the sixth when Aliza Guerrero singled, stole second, and scored on Christy McGraw's single to short.  McGraw finished 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead Keene State, which outhit the Polar Bears 6-5.  

Crisp went the distance, striking out seven and allowing five hits.  

FDU-Florham

Morgan Fallon was 2-for-3 with a run as the Owls fell to the Devils 5-2 in the second game of the day.  The Devils sent nine batters to the plate in a three run second inning.  Nikki Caruso opened the with a single to left and scored on Wynne McCann's double down the left field line.  After Kristy Crilley struck out, Toni-Ann Canova doubled in McCann.  A walk to Amanda Finn and a single by Paige Lillie loaded the bases, and a KSC error brought in Canova for a 3-0 lead.

The teams traded runs in the fourth and fifth innings.  A walk, a fielder's choice, and a single loaded the bases in the fourth for FDU, and Sara Lima made it 4-0 with a single to center.  KSC got on the board in the bottom half of the frame.  Bracken and Fallon opened with consecutive singles, and after Bracken was cut down on a fielder's choice that allowed Pelletier to reach, a wild pitch moved Fallon and Pelletier to second and third.  Catherine Tewell's RBI groundout brought in Fallon.  

After the Devils added one more run in the fifth inning, KSC made it 5-2 in the fifth when Caroline McSherry singled and took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Kayla Votto's single down the right field line.

Ashlee McGan started and tossed 4.1 innings, striking out a pair of batters.  Kellie Saunders scattered two hits over the final 2.2 innings.

After a day off on Wednesday, Keene State will take on Ramapo (N.J.) and Wesleyan (Conn.) on March 20 at 9 am and 11 am, respectively.
