Pitching Leads Keene State Softball Past Ramapo and Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MINNEOLA, Fla.--The Keene State College softball team got solid pitching performances from both their starters en route to a 3-1 win over Ramapo College (N.J.) and a 1-0 win over Wesleyan University (Conn.) on Thursday.

Keene State ended a three game losing skid and is 3-3 so far in 2014.

Ramapo

Keene State rallied with three runs in the sixth to support a solid pitching performance from Ashlee McGan.  The freshman picked up her first career win with with a complete game five hitter, striking out nine in the process.

The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Melanie Walling hit a 1-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly.  McGan pitched out of a jam in the third, as a Ramapo hit, a hit batter, and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with none out, but McGan rallied to strike out the next three batters.

KSC put together the winning rally in the sixth inning.  Kayla Votto hit a single with one out, and stole second.  After Stephanie Long singled to right and stole second herself, Anna Glassman slapped a hit through the left side to score Votto and tie the game.  Glassman stole second base, and Heather Pelletier and Morgan Fallon followed up with consecutive singles to bring in two more runs.

McGan shut Ramapo down, allowing two hits in the final three innings.

Wesleyan

Mariah Crisp put together the second outstanding pitching performance of the day, recording seven strikeouts and allowing just three hits in a complete game effort.  The game was a pitcher's duel, as Crisp's effort was countered by Wesleyan's Susan Pardo, who struck out eight and allowed three hits.

The Owls got the only run they would need in the fifth inning.  Morgan Fallon led off with a single up the middle, and moved all the way to third on Aliza Guerrero's bunt single.  Catherine Tewell's sacrifice fly to center field let Fallon tag up and score, giving Crisp the lead.

Crisp slammed the door shut on the Cardinals, giving up a solitary single in the final two innings.

Wesleyan had runners in scoring position only twice; in the second inning, when Abby Rutt reached on an error and stole second, and in the fifth inning, when Alex Sarkowsky led off with a single and was bunted over the second, but Crisp struck out the next two batters to end the chance.

The Owls will take the field on Friday with games against McDaniel (Md.) at 11 a.m. and Hamilton at 1 p.m.
