Softball Splits With UMass-Dartmouth On Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KEENE, N.H.--Mariah Crisp recorded 11 strikeouts to lead the Keene State College softball team to a 3-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Owl Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.  The Corsairs took the opener 1-0.

KSC finishes the regular season 15-17, and 7-7 in the LEC.  The Owls will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament and will play Plymouth State University in their opening game of the tournament, held at Eastern Connecticut State on May 1.

The Corsairs end the year 11-19, and 7-7 in the LEC.  UMass-Dartmouth will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament, playing Western Connecticut State.

Game One

The Corsairs got the only run of the game in the fifth inning.  Kayla Kirby led off with a walk, and moved to second in a single through the left side from Shannon Droney.  Emily Pontes reached on a bunt single to load the bases, and Ally Santerre lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Kirby in support of starting pitcher Shannon Orton.

Orton limited the Owls to three hits, getting out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh.  Rachel Boynton walked with one out, and pinch runner Caroline McSherry moved to second on a fielder's choice, but was stranded when Stephanie Long struck out to end the game.

KSC starter Ashlee McGan struck out five in a complete game effort with three walks and six hits.  Stephanie Long, Katie Newell, and Molly Dussault had hits for the Owls.

Game Two

KSC got on the board early to gain a split in the nightcap.  Consecutive singles by Long and Sara Bracken started the frame, and and a wild pitch moved them both up 60 feet.  After Aliza Guerrero grounded out, Morgan Fallon singled through the left side for the first run of the game.  A perfectly executed double steal brought in the second; as Fallon broke for second, Bracken took off for home plate and slid in under the tag.

The Owls added a third run in the fifth when Caroline McSherry reached on an error and scored on a double by Long.

Crisp, meanwhile was untouchable, no-hitting the Corsairs for the first three innings before Santerre got on with a single to lead off the fourth.  UMass-Dartmouth brokeup the shutout in the sixth when Droney reached on an error and came around on Santerre's single up the middle.

Crisp finished with 11 Ks, limiting UMD to one unearned run and three hits.

Before the game, seniors Ellissa Coburn and Molly Dussault were honored for their contributions to the program.
