Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A Mariah Crisp gem in game one and a bases clearing double by freshman Kayla Votto in game two helped the Keene State College softball team sweep Little East Conference foes Rhode Island College 3-0 and 6-4 at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Crisp was nearly unhittable in game one, as she held RIC (8-12, 2-2 LEC) to just three in a shutout victory. Crisp struck out seven Anchorwomen without issuing a walk in the win.
The game moved along at a brisk pace as Crisp and RIC senior righty Michelle Sylvestre kept the offenses at bay. KSC (7-5, 2-0 LEC) broke through in the top of fifth as sophomore catcher Anna Glassman led off with a double to center field. She moved over to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI groundout by Votto.
The Owls added to their lead an inning later as freshman Aliza Guerrero brought one in with an RBI triple to right center field. Junior Katie Newell followed with an RBI single to bring in Guerrero.
Sylvestre took the loss. Guerrero went 2-for-3 with a run scored, two triples and an RBI.
In game two, RIC freshman pitcher Lindsey Cabral started off with a strong effort as the Anchorwomen built a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the second, with runners on second and third and two down, junior shortstop Katelyn Sykora singled through the left side to bring in sophomore left fielder Abigail Francis.
RIC looked poised to close out the game in the top of the seventh, but the Owls had other plans.
KSC got three consecutive singles to start the frame and load the bases. Guerrero came on to pinch hit and singled to left to cut the visitor's deficit to one run, 2-1. Votto followed with a bases-clearing double to right center to put Keene on top, 4-2. Junior second baseman Sara Bracken doubled in a run and sophomore third baseman Morgan Fallon pitched in with an RBI single before Darling came on in relief to end the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cabral and Sykora each singled and moved up to second and third on a ground out. With two away, Pokora brought them in with a two-run single, but Crisp, who was summoned from the bullpen earlier in the inning, ended the game after Pokora's base knock.
KSC freshman pitcher Ashlee McGan earned the win to bring her record to .500 (3-3), allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out three. Cabral took the loss (2-3). Junior first baseman Rachel Boynton went 3-for-3 in the victory.
The Owls next game will be Sunday, April 6 at noon on the road against Eastern Connecticut State University. Rhode Island College will host Tufts on Tuesday, April 8 (4 p.m.).
