Box Score UNION, N.J.--Senior Sam Derr tossed a no-hitter to lead Lebanon Valley College to a 3-0 win over Keene State College in the opening game of the Kean University Regional at the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday afternoon.
Derr struck out five and faced three batters over the minimum for the Dutchmen (33-4). Keene State, which had a five game winning streak snapped, falls to 19-18.
The loss spoiled a solid effort from KSC starter Mariah Crisp, who struck out nine and scattered five hits, giving up just two earned runs.
Crisp and Derr were locked in a pitchers duel through the first four innings. Crisp got out of a jam in the first inning with two on and one out by striking out Allie Hartman and Jordyn Miller. The Owls had their best chance in the second inning, when Katie Newell reached on a fielder's choice and Rachel Boynton did the same on an error, but were left stranded when Caroline McSherry struck out to end the inning.
Keene State had their only other baserunner in the third inning when Sara Bracken walked with two out.
The Dutchmen made the breakthrough in the bottom of the fifth when Katie Deardorff singled, stole second, and scored on sister Tessa Deardorff's single to left. LVC added two more in the next inning when Derr led off with a double and Hartman reached on an error. Emily Johnson singled to right-center to bring in both runners.
Keene State will play either Husson University or Kean University at 1:30 pm on Saturday in an elimination game.
