Johnson's Hat Trick Leads Owls Past New England College

KEENE, N.H. - The Keene State College field hockey team added to the record books in their 11-0 rout of New England College Saturday morning at Owl Athletic Complex.

The Owls (2-0) set records for most goals scored in a game (11) and most points (27). Brittany Johnson led the way as she scored her first career goal and finished the day with a hat trick. 

Keene State had a chance to take the lead when the Owls were awarded a penalty stroke. Lauren Villanova sent her shot to the upper right corner, but Karlie Bove made an outstanding stick save that deflected over the goal. 

Melissa Habelow opened the scoring 5:43 into the game when she blasted a shot from the top of the circle off a corner for the Owls. Marisa Lemoine made the score 2-0 at 9:00 with an assist from Haylie Dolan, while Kayla Renaud converted her penalty stroke attempt as KSC took a 3-0 lead. 

Lemoine and Dolan continued the scoring barrage to make it 5-0 and Johnson closed our the half with her first-career goal as the Owls went into the break leading 6-0.

Sami Smith made it 7-0 with an unassisted score 1:22 into the second half, while Johnson and Renaud would each find the back of the net before Morgan Richmond tallied her first collegiate goal. Johnson completed the hat trick at the 61:31 mark for the 11-0 final. 

KSC outshot the Pilgrims 44-1 and held the advantage in corners, 13-1. Goalkeepers Meaghan Dwyer, Nicole Difilippo and Kendra Lonergan combined for the shutout. New England College (0-4) keeper Karlie Bove stayed busy, making 26 saves in net. 

The Owls return to action Tuesday, September 9 at Williams at 6 p.m., while the Pilgrims travel to Wheelock College Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. start.
