Renaud's Late Goal Boosts Field Hockey Past Eastern Connecticut State

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Kayla Renaud scored with 9:39 remaining to lift the Keene State College field hockey team to a 2-1 Little East Conference win over Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday night at Owl Athletic Complex.

The Owls won their eighth consecutive game to improve to 12-4, with a perfect 8-0 mark in the LEC.  The Warriors fall to 7-6, and 4-3 within the LEC.

Keene State outshot the Warriors 19-6, and held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The teams traded early scoring opportunities, as Samantha Scavo saved Sami Smith's effort in the fourth minute, while the Owls' Emily Medeiros had a defensive save to keep Alex Kallgren off the scoresheet.

Gabriela Meza had a defensive save of her own, sliding to keep Sami Smith from scoring in the sixth minute.

Keene State made the breakthrough at the 23:42 mark; the Owls were awarded a penalty stroke and Casi Smith stepped up to blast the shot past Scavo.

Four minutes later, the Warriors had tied the game as Kallgren deflected a shot past Meaghan Dwyer off an assist from Laura Chicorka.

The second half had fewer opportunities, but the Owls earned consecutive penalty corners that set the stage for the winning goal.  Brittney Cardente sent in the corner to Marita Brothers, who laid the ball off for Renaud to stroke her fifth goal of the year.

Dwyer came up with a key save with 89 seconds to go, stoning Mackenzie Brower as the Warriors went in search of the equalizer.

Scavo made five saves for the Warriors, while Dwyer made four saves for KSC.

Keene State heads into a tough portion of their LEC schedule, beginning with a trip to Plymouth State University on October 20 at 6:30 p.m.  The Warriors head to Westfield State for a 7 p.m. start on the same day.
