KSC Field Hockey Nipped By Plymouth State In Overtime

Box Score

NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Sophomore Katie Martin scored the game-winning goal eight minutes into overtime Tuesday evening as Plymouth State University upset Keene State College, 1-0, in a pivotal Little East Conference field hockey game at the New Hampton School Field.

Martin pounded home a rebound out of mid-air to give the Panthers the dramatic victory, snapping Keene State's 32-game LEC regular season winning streak. PSU improves to 10-3 overall and pulls into a tie for first place in the Little East with the Owls (12-5), both teams at 8-1 in conference play. It is Keene State's first regular season conference loss since a 3-1 setback to UMass Dartmouth in October 2012.

Martin scored the game-winner after a shot by junior Kaitlyn Wilder was stopped on the goal line by Keene defender Kendal Brown  Martin knocked the loose ball into the cage for the game-winner, her second goal of the season.

Both goalies were outstanding, as Panther sophomore Alivia Bates made six saves in the victory and Owl senior Meaghan Dwyer stopped seven shots in the setback.

It was a defensive contest for both teams all evening. The teams combined for just three shots in the first half, two by the Panthers.  There were more opportunities in the second half as Keene State out-shot the home team by a 7-6 count. The best chance was by Plymouth State with 20 minutes remaining, but a penalty stroke by Wilder was stopped on a great save by Dwyer.

Bates made a pair of saves for PSU in the overtime period, including a diving stop on a shot by junior Sami Smith. Brown made two defensive saves for Keene State in overtime, including one on a shot by PSU's leading scorer, junior Nicole Burgess, before Martin scored the game-winner at the 78:19 mark.

Both teams continue LEC play on Saturday as PSU visits Westfield State University for a 3:30 p.m. match-up and KSC travels to UMass Dartmouth for a 4:00 p.m. start.
