Women's Basketball Routs SUNY Cobleskill In Season Opener

KEENE, N.H.--Sophomore Sandi Purcell scored 17 points as the Keene State College women's basketball team rolled to a 91-45 win over SUNY Cobleskill in the opener of the 2015 Keene State College Tip-Off tournament on Friday night at Spaulding Gym.

Freshman Valerie Martin marked her collegiate debut with 14 points, and senior Ryanne Williams added 10.  The Owls (1-0) will play Sage College in the championship game at 3 p.m.  The Gators were 76-48 victors over Mount Ida College in the day's second game.  Mount Ida and SUNY Cobleskill will play in the consolation at 1 p.m.

The Owls shot 44% (12-27) from downtown and limited the Fighting Tigers to 26.9% shooting from the field.

Keene State raced out to an early 9-1 lead on baskets from Kelsey Cognetta and Amanda Petrow, and after Shelby Preston made a pair of free throws, Williams knocked down a three from just left of center for a 12-3 lead.

Emily McPadden made a three with 39 seconds left in the first quarter, but the Fighting Tigers' Shiann Coons countered with a deep three just ahead of the buzzer for a 26-10 KSC lead.

Williams made another three with 56 seconds left in the second quarter as KSC led 47-22 at halftime, and the Owls picked up where they left off in the third quarter, as Cognetta and Purcell drained consecutive threes to open the period.

Keene State took the biggest lead of the game at 91-43 on a pair of foul shots by Courtney Sheehy.  

Stephanie D'annolfo pulled down a team high 10 rebounds, while freshman Josie Amerson had nine and Sarah Kober had six.  The Owls had assists on 25 of their 35 baskets, led by five each from D'annolfo and Purcell, and four from Lydia Vital.
