Volleyball Falls to UMass Boston In Little East Championship Game

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.--The Keene State College volleyball team fell in the Little East Conference championship game to UMass Boston 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon at Clark Gym.

Keene State, which was appearing in the LEC title game for the third time in four years, likely sees the season come to an end with a 23-9 record.  The 23 wins represent the third highest single season total in school history, behind the 2010 record of 27, and the 25 in 2006 and 2007.

The first set was tied at 11 before the Beacons reeled off four straight points, leading to a Keene State timeout.  The Beacons extended the lead to 21-14 on a kill from Pepper Baker and closed out the set on a kill from Haley Diedrick.

UMass Boston jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the second set, and led by as many as 18-6 on a service ace by Christina Elliott, and KSC never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

It was the Owls who started the strongest in the third set, as Rachel Lamica's kill gave KSC a 7-3 lead, but the Beacons responded with a 6-2 run that tied the set at nine.

A combination block by Madeleine Nossiff and Brooke Hatanaka boosted KSC's advantage back to 13-9, only to see UMass Boston respond again, tying the set at 16 on a KSC error.  UMass Boston then ended the set by scoring nine of the next 12 points.

Lamica led the way with seven kills, while Cat Kazazian had six.  Riley Bunker had 16 digs and Alexis Michal had 12 assists.  The Beacons limited Keene State to .037 hitting on the afternoon.
