Box Score BOSTON, Mass.--Reigning Little East Conference Player of the Week Kelsey Cognetta scored 11 of her 24 points in overtime as the Keene State College women's basketball team closed out the fall semester with a 68-56 win over UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon
The result keeps Keene State undefeated this season, wtih an 8-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the LEC. The Beacons are 6-3, and 0-2 against LEC opposition.
Keene State jumped out to an early 14-4 lead as Cognetta sandwiched a pair of threes around a jumper from Stephanie D'Annolfo, and led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter on Amanda Petrow's free throws with six seconds left on the clock.
A three point shot from Sandi Purcell with 3:24 left in the first half gave KSC a 26-19 lead, and only two free throws from the Beacons' Raven Kelsey cut the lead to 26-21 at halftime.
UMass Boston went on a 12-7 run in the third quarter to tie the game at 33, and ended the frame up 39-37 on Olivia Murphy's layp with seven seconds left in the period.
Another layup from Murphy, this one with 2:37 left in regulation, gave UMass Boston a 49-44 lead, only to see the Owls rattled off seven straight points as Purcell drained another three, Cognetta had a layup, and Purcell finished it off with a pair of free throws.
Yet another hoop from Murphy in the final seconds forced overtime as Cognetta missed a shot with two seconds left that could have won it.
The Beacons took the lead on their first possession of the extra period, but would sink just one more shot in the final five minutes, as Cognetta blitzed the Beacons to put the game out of reach.
The senior tied the game with a pair of free throws, and after a layup from Lydia Vital, had a layup and another three point play that gave the Owls a 60-55 lead. Another hoop from Vital and two more Cognetta foul shots boosted the lead to 64-55. UMass Boston scored just one point in the final 2:42 and were outscored in the overtime 17-5.
Purcell joined Cognetta in double-figures with 17 points, while Sarah Kober had 13 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Murphy scored 15 points off the bench to lead the Beacons.
Keene State is off until December 29, when the Owls will play Worcester State University in Phoenix, Arizona.
