Owls Knock Off Eastern Connecticut, 48-35

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Keene State College women's basketball team limited Eastern Connecticut State University to 20.6 percent shooting from the floor in winning their seventh game in nine outings on their opponent's home floor this season in a 48-35 Little East Conference victory Wednesday evening at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

The Owls have won four straight and improve to 14-8, and 6-5 in the Little East Conference. Eastern drops to 15-7, and 8-3 in conference play.

Keene has won four straight and Eastern had a four-game winning streak halted. It was the lowest point total and worst field goal percentage of the season for Eastern.

Keene junior guard Kelsey Cognetta scored nine of her 13 points in the second half, sinking seven of eight free throws and turned the ball over only one time in 36 minutes. Senior forward Courtney Roberts grabbed seven of her team-high ten rebounds in the second half when the visitors pulled away from a four-point halftime lead and Ryanne Williams contributed six points and nine boards off the bench.

Against Keene's aggressive zone defense, three Eastern scorers combined to miss 30 of 36 shots from the floor. Senior forward Shannon McCourt had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors, while Kristina Forsman added 11 points and six boards.

No team was able to take a lead larger than four points in the first half, as the Warriors took a 23-19 advantage into the locker room on a Jill Ritrofsky layup with 2 seconds left on the clock.

Both teams were held scoreless until a Sarah Kober layup at 15:58 brough the Owls within two (21-23). Up 34-33 with 6:12 remaining, Ryanne Williams scored back-to-back layups and Courtney Roberts added a bucket for a 6-0 run and a 40-33 lead that would not be relinquished.

The Owls host Western Connecticut in their final regular season home game Saturday at 1 p.m. The Warriors travel to UMass Dartmouth on February 14 for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
