Box Score KEENE, NH – Courtney Roberts tied her career high with 23 points as the Keene State College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to LEC opponent Western Connecticut by a score of 64-63 Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Owls (14-9, 6-6) see their four game win streak snapped, while Western (16-7, 6-6) has now won five-straight.
The Owls jumped out to a 10-5 lead 4:45 into the game on two of Courtney Roberts' 10 first half points. Tied at 10 at the 12:57 mark, KSC put together a 12-2 run over the next five minutes sparked by six points by Roberts.
Caroline Brasa reached the 1,000 point mark of her career on a 3-pointer with 3:21 left that capped a 8-2 spurt by the Colonials bringing them within five (25-20).
The Colonials took their first lead of the game since the 18:25 mark in the first half on a Brasa long distance shot giving the visitors a 30-29 advantage 1:30 into the second half.
Wojtas connected on a 3-pointer that gave the Owls a five point cushion (47-42) with 12:13 on the clock.
A six-point KSC lead was erased as Emily Dobson sank a 3-pointer giving Western a 55-53 lead with 5:17 left in the game. Western extended that lead to as large as eight points on a Dobson layup as the Owls were unable to mount a comeback.
For the Owls, Roberts pulled down eight rebounds to go with her 23 points, while Sarah Kober recorded 10 points and six rebounds. Stephanie D'Annolfo had a complete game of eight points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals and Kelsey Cognetta finished with six points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The Colonials were paced by Brasa's 19 points and nine rebounds, while Colleen Cosker added 11 points. Samantha Smith came off the bench to score 13 and pull down four rebounds to go with three steals and two assists. Western shot a blistering 46.5 percent (20-for-43) from the field for the game, while shooting just 47.1 percent (8-17) from three-point range.
The Owls struggled from long range shooting 17.6 percent (3-for-17) and 25-for-70 from the field, while holding a 39-35 advantage in rebounds.
Prior to the game, seniors Nikki Stacy, Christan Wojtas and Courtney Roberts were honored for their contributions to the basketball team over the last four years.
In upcoming action, KSC will hit the road on Tuesday for a conference matchup at Plymouth State, while the Colonials host Eastern Connecticut the same day. Both games are set for 5:30 p.m.
