KSC Softball Slips To Wesleyan and Utica

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla.--The Keene State College softball team fell in a pair of games in Florida on Tuesday, losing 6-3 to Wesleyan (Conn.) and 8-7 to Utica College.

Keene State is now 1-5 this season.

Wesleyan University

The Cardinals scored in each of the first three innings, then warded off a KSC comeback in a 6-3 win.

Wesleyan struck in the first for a single run when Isabel Linzer led off with a single and came around on Jamie Hom's single.

Susan Pardo singled in a pair of runs in the second and Wesleyan scored twice more in the third for a 5-0 lead before KSC got on the board.  Stephanie Long hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the third inning and scored on an error by Wesleyan pitcher Julie McDonald.

Wesleyan tacked on another run in the fifth, then staved off the Owls in the final two innings.  Pinch hitter Katie Newell tripled in the sixth inning, but was left stranded when Rachel Boynton popped out to shortstop and Shae Crosby flied out to left.

In the seventh, KSC closed the gap to 6-3 when Sara Bracken doubled with one out and scored on an error.  Long singled and came home on Kathleen Remick's groundout, but Brittany DaMota flew out to center field to end the game.

Olivia Indorf went the first 2.1 innings in the circle, taking the loss.  Ashlee McGan allowed two hits in 4.2 innings of relief.

Utica College

Utica scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim an 8-7 win.

It was the Owls who grabbed an early lead, as Long led off with a single to center and stole second.  Sara Bracken doubled down the left field line to bring her home, and moved to third on Aliza Guerrero's fielder's choice.

A wild pitch moved both runners up, and after Guerrero moved to third on Jen Galavotti's fly out, Shae Crosby singled to right-center to make it 3-0.

KSC increased the lead to 4-0 in the third when Guerrero hit a lead-off triple and scored on Crosby's second RBI of the day.

Utica got one run back on an RBI single from Samantha Husak, but KSC increased the lead to 7-1 in the fifth when Bracken scored on a passed ball, Crosby hit an RBI double, and Newell brought her in with a single to left-center.

The Pioneers clawed two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Alaina Wickwire, and a 2-RBI hit off the bat of Christy Traglia.

Utica won the game with a two out rally in the seventh.  Cassie Smith and Wickwire singled, and Taylor Ellis walked to load the bases.  Mariah Crisp induced a fielder's choice to cut down Smith at home, but Alyssa Russell brought in one run with an infield single, and Husak cleared the bases with a triple to right field as the Pioneers walked off with the win.

The loss spoiled a great day at the plate by Crosby, who was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in.  Newell finished with a pair of hits for the Owls.  Crisp took the loss, allowing six hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Keene State is off on Wednesday, then will resume action against Western New England University and Trinity College (Conn.) on Thursday.
