Owls Handed First Loss Of The Season With 65-59 Setback At USM

GORHAM, Maine--The University of Southern Maine outscored Keene State College 32-14 in the fourth quarter to complete a comeback from 17 points down and earn a 65-59 win in Little East Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

Tale Of The Tape

  • Keene State had its 11 game season opening winning streak end with the loss.  The Owls were one win shy of setting a new school record for consecutive victories.
  • Kelsey Cognetta led Keene State with 14 points, while Sarah Kober and Sandi Purcell had 10 apiece.  Southern Maine's Ella Ramonas led all players with 23 points.  
  • The Owls were undone at the foul line, connecting on only 11 of 23 free throws, compared to the nearly perfect Huskies, who made 17 of 19 freebies.

First Half Highlights

  • Southern Maine's Gretchen Anderson and Alexa Srolovitz both made threes as the Huskies raced out to an early 10-4 lead.  Keene State pulled within 10-9 as Stephanie D'Annolfo made a jumper and Cognetta canned a three pointer, but the Huskies ended the first period on a 7-2 run to lead 17-11.
  • Purcell knocked down threes on two early possessions in the second quarter to tie the score at 19.
  • Keene State outscored Southern Maine 23-6 in the second period, as Purcell hit a pair of early three pointers and Emily McPadden knocked down a three with 1:14 left. 
  • Sarah Kober's layup with six seconds remaining gave the Owls a 34-23 lead at the break.

Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls picked up where they left off in the third quarter, taking a 40-25 lead on a pair of free throws from Cognetta with 6:49 remaining.
  • Lydia Vital's hoop with 2:45 to go gave the Owls their largest lead at 45-28.
  • Megan Pelletier converted a three point play on the Huskies next possesion and Kimberly Howrigan scored to cut the gap to 45-33 at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Huskies came roaring out of the gate in the fourth quarter, opening up on a 14-0 run, including 10 points from Ramonas, to take a 47-45 lead.
  • Cognetta tied the score at 47 with 5:49 to go, only to see Ramonas and Kayla Stacy connect on threes for a 53-48 lead. 
  • D'Annolfo's layup with 2:39 to play tied the game at 53, but Srolovitz hit another three with 2:26 to go, and Keene State never got closer than three after that.  The Huskies made seven free throws in the final 1:37.

  • The Owls head to Worcester State on Monday for a noon matchup.  The Owls and Lancers will play on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
  • Southern Maine travels to Rhode Island College on January 13 at 5:30 pm.
