Smith Breaks Single Season Goals Record As Owls Blast Corsairs on Senior Day

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--The Keene State College field hockey team sent the class of 2017 out on a high note, as the Owls rolled to a 6-1 win over UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action on Saturday at Owl Athletic Complex.

Records

  • Keene State: 14-3, 9-0 LEC
  • UMass Dartmouth: 4-11, 3-7 LEC

Up Next

  • The Owls end the regular season with three road games.  KSC will head to Worcester State University on October 19 for a 7 p.m. start.  A Keene State win will wrap up KSC's fourth straight regular season LEC championship and the top seed in the LEC tournament.
  • UMass Dartmouth plays Roger Williams in a non-conference contest on October 20.

Tale of the Tape

  • Sami Smith put her name at the top of another KSC record, netting yet another hat-trick to break Tanya Strong's single season record of 30 goals set in 2003.  The senior needs two more points to break Strong's single season points record, also set in 2003.
  • Before the game, seniors Smith, Kayla Renaud, Paige Hefferan, Marita Brothers, and Brittney Cardente were honored for their contributions to the program.  The class is 71-20 overall and 40-2 in LEC play, with three LEC regular season and conference championships, as well as three NCAA appearances.
  • The Owls also got goals from Mia Brickley, Kayla Renaud, and Hannah Cook.  Gwen Thayer had six saves in 56 minutes of action, while Jordan LaRaus made one stop in 13 minutes.
  • Keene State outshot the Corsairs 25-9, including 16-4 in the second half.

First Half Highlights

  • Keene State had to wait until the 22nd minute to make the breakthrough, but the goals came fast a furious after that.
  • Hannah Cook opened the scoring with her third goal of the season, and Smith got on the board two minutes later, deflecting in Kendal Brown's shot after a corner.
  • After Julia Babbitt was denied by a defensive save from the Corsairs, Keene State was awarded a corner with no time remaining in the first half.    Cardente sent in the corner to Brown, who set up Smith for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Second Half Highlights

  • Brickley scored just 54 seconds into the half, and Smith got her record breaking goal in the 40th minute off a pass from Cardente.
  • The Corsairs broke up the shutout five minutes later, when Delaney Burns beat Thayer with an assist from Katelin Morrissey.
  • KSC restored the five goal advantage just two minutes later however, when Renaud hammered home her fourth of the year.
