Field Hockey Win Streak At 11 With 2-1 Win Over Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Julia Babbitt's goal 10 minutes after halftime gave the Keene State College field hockey team a 2-1 win over Smith College in the Owls' regular season finale on Wednesday night.

  • The Owls head into the postseason on the back of 11 wins in a row.  KSC will look for a four-peat of LEC championships when the Owls host Eastern Connecticut State in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. on October 29.

Tale of the Tape

  • Smith outshot KSC 15-8, and held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners, but the Owls got seven saves from reigning LEC Goalkeeper of the Week Gwen Thayer to improve to 2-1 in one goal games this season.
  • Sami Smith had the Owls' other goal, while Jensyn Dandeneau, who was honored by both the LEC and ECAC this week, had an assist.  Smith's 32 goals and 74 points currently lead all of Division III, while her 202 career points are tied for 27th all-time in Division III history.
  • The 11 game winning streak is the longest since KSC won 15 straight games in 2014.


First Half Highlights

  • Another early goal gave the Owls the lead, as Smith tipped in Dandeneau's pass for her 32nd goal of the season with just 4:57 played.
  • The Pioneers tied the scored five minutes later, when Alex Larosee scored off a pass from Bayleigh Bogan.
  • KSC tried to hit back immediately, as Erica Stauffer was denied by Smith goalie Cameo Tietje in the 12th minute, who also made a save on Sami Smith in the 21st minute.
  • Thayer stood on her head to keep the game tied, making a double-stop on Elsie Odhiambo, then saving from Beatrice Chaudoin from the resulting penalty corner.
  • Another save from Thayer with less than 10 minutes to go before halftime, this time on Devon Datsis, kept hte game tied at halftime.


Second Half Highlights

  • Thayer and Tietje traded saves in the early minutes of the half, but Babbit put Keene State in front for good when she tucked home a loose ball for her 10th of the season.
  • Smith College searched for an equalizer, but Thayer made a save from Emily Biggs, and despite consecutive penalty corners, the Pioneers managed just one shot in the final 12 minutes when Bogan shot wide.
