KEENE, N.H.--Taylor Bright and Riley Bunker each had 25 digs as the Keene State College volleyball team fell to Western New England University 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23) at Spaulding Gym on Thursday night.

  • The regular season comes to an end when Keene State hosts Eastern Connecticut State and Maine Maritime Academy at 12 and 4 p.m., respectively, on October 29.  Seniors Brooke Hatanaka, Leslie Hearns, and Taylor Bright will be honored before the Maine Maritime match.
  • The Golden Bears also are in action on October 29, hosting Gordon College.

Tale of the Tape

  • Rachel Lamica led the KSC offense with 17 kills, while Courtney Collins had nine, Kat Carrel had seven and Brooke Hatanaka had six while hitting .312.
  • Bunker and Bright were joined in double-digit kills by Hearns, who had 14, Katie Cunningham, who had 13, and Lamica, who had 12.  Bunker now has 531 digs this season, the fifth highest single season total.  She also needs 57 digs to reach 1,000 for her career.
  • Cunningham also posted 43 assists, giving her 789 for the season and moving past Alexis Michal's 2012 season total of 762 for the 10th highest single season assist count in program history.


Set One Highlights

 

  • The Owls led 5-2 on back to back kills from Lamica and Hannah Szymanski, but committed five errors in a 7-0 run for the Golden Bears, who took a 9-5 lead.
  • WNE increased their lead to 14-9, but the Owls took a 16-15 lead with a kill by Lamica.
  • The teams continued to trade points, and a KSC error gave WNE a 23-22 lead before Hatanaka tied the set at 23 with a kill.
  • After Cassandra Holmes forced extra points, kills from Cunningham and Collins gave the set to KSC.

 

Set Two Highlights

 

  • Torie Howdeshell's ace gave the Golden Bears am 8-7 lead, which increased to 14-9 on an error by Keene State.
  • Emily Woodford's service ace made it 19-13, and Keene State could not get closer than four the rest of the way.
  • Ashley Matthews' kill gave WNE a second set win that tied the match.

 

Set Three Highlights

 

  • The Golden Bears slowly pulled away, going up 8-5 on a kill by Carly Skibinski.
  • Keene State got within 18-15 on an error by Matthews.
  • Consecutive kills from Jenna Leuck increased the lead to 21-15, and the set ended when Leuck set Matthews up for a kill.

 

Set Four Highlights

  • Keene State made a bright start, taking a 9-5 lead on a kill by Collins.
  • Szymanski and Carrel teamed up for a block that made it 14-7, and the Owls took their biggest lead of the set at 18-9 on Carrel's kill.
  • The Golden Bears would rally, going on a 15-5 run that gave them a 24-23 lead and match point; they killed off any KSC comeback hopes as the match ended on a KSC error.
