Free Scoring Owls Win Fifth Straight With 9-1 Victory Over Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt.--Sami Smith and Jensyn Dandeneau combined for five goals the Keene State College field hockey team blew out Castleton University 9-1 in non-conference action on Thursday night.

Tale of the Tape

  • The Owls won their fifth straight game with tonight's rout, and have outscored their opponents 31-4 over those five games.  Keene State has outscored opponents 68-21 this season.
  • Tonight was the fifth time KSC has scored at least seven goals in a game, including the last three contests.
  • Sami Smith finished with a hat-trick, her third this season and ninth of her career.  Dandeneau added two more, and now has four goals and three assists in her last two games.
  • Hannah Cook, Brittney Cardente, Julia Babbitt, and Nicole Tobin each added single goals.  Babbitt also had a pair of assists, as did Erica Stauffer.
  • Gwendolyn Thayer and Jordan LaRaus each played a half in goal; Thayer made seven stops and LaRaus made four.


First Half Highlights

  • KSC scored twice in less than two minutes to jump out to an early lead.  Babbitt set up Dandeneau for the opener at the 5:09 nine mark, and the freshman got her second of the game 117 seconds later with Sami Smith providing the assist.
  • The Spartans halved the deficit in the 16th minute, with Emily Lowell's unassisted effort, but the Owls went back up by two with Smith's first of the game at the 17:40 mark.
  • Cook found the back of the cage in the 22nd minute, and Cardente made it 5-1 just over two minutes later.  Smith nabbed her second of the game with 15 ticks on the clock before halftime for a 6-1 lead.


Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls added two more quick-fire goals early in the second half, first with Babbitt's unassisted tally, then set up Smith for the hat-trick 17 seconds later.
  • Tobin completed the scoring in the 44th minute, getting her second of the year unassisted.
