Boucher Gets Win No. 400 With 69-61 Win Over Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, Conn.--Senior Kelsey Cognetta scored a career high 27 points as the Keene State College women's basketball team toppled Western Connecticut State University 69-61 on Saturday at Feldman Arena.

The Series

  • Keene State completed a season sweep of the Colonials with the win.  It was the first time Keene State has swept the Colonials since the 2006-07 season. 

Tale of the Tape

  • Cognetta finished the game 9-for-15 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.  The 27 points surpassed a career high set against Austin College on January 2, 2014.
  • Also in double-figures were Stephanie D'Annolfo, who had 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Sandi Purcell, who netted 10 points.  
  • Jancy Sherwood led the Colonials with 14 points off the bench.
  • The win was No. 400 for head coach Keith Boucher, in his 28th season at the helm of the KSC squad.

First Half Highlights

  • The Owls roared out to a 16-2 lead as Purcell drained a pair of threes and Cognetta another while Western Connecticut missed their first seven shots of the game.
  • Nicole Mierzejewski knocked down a three and Emily Dobson made two free throws as the Owls led 18-9 after one.
  • Western Connecticut State went on a 9-3 run to open the second quarter, cutting the lead to 21-18 on Tashai Price's layup with 3:39 left in the first half.  
  • KSC's Sarah Kober scored the final four points of the half to give the Owls a 29-21 lead at the break. 

Second Half Highlights

  • Western Connecticut kept pressing, tying the game at 33 with 6:05 left in the third quarter on Samantha Smith's three pointer.
  • Two freebies from Purcell pushed the lead back to 45-40 before the Colonials got one foul shot from Kaitlyn Labonte that trimmed the lead to 45-41 at the end of three quarters.
  • A 12-6 run to open the fourth quarter highlighted Sherwood's three had the Colonials in front for the first time all game.
  • Sherwood made another three with 2:52 to go for a 61-59 lead, but the Owls tied the game at 61 on two free throws by Cognetta, and Western Connecticut State would not score again.
  • Ryanne Williams' jumper with 2:16 left put the Owls in front for good, and Cognetta made four free throws down the stretch for the final margin.

  • Keene State hosts Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 5:30 in a game that is likely to decide homecourt throughout the Little East Conference tournament.  Both teams are tied in the standings after the Warriors lost to UMass Dartmouth 72-65 in overtime today.  Eastern Connectiuct State beat KSC 54-51 on January 27.
  • Western Connecticut State heads to Rhode Island College on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
