Owls Fall To Warriors, 63-50

KEENE, N.H.--The Keene State College women's basketball team fell 63-50 to Eastern Connecticut State University in a battle for the top seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament at Spaulding Gym on Wednesday night.

  • Keene State: 20-4, 9-4 LEC
  • Eastern Connecticut State: 18-6, 10-3 LEC 

Playoff Permutations

  • The Warriors secured the No. 1 seed by sweeping the regular season matchups with the Owls.  The quarterfinals are on February 23 at the top four seeds, with the semifinals and finals at the highest remaining seed on February 26-27.
  • Keene State can still clinch a share of its first ever regular season championship with a win on Saturday at Rhode Island College.  The Owls will likely be the No. 2 seed in the tourney, but could fall to No. 3 with a combination of a loss to the Anchorwomen and a Southern Maine win over UMass Dartmouth.

Tale of the Tape

 

  • Keene State struggled offensively, making just four field goals in the first half and did not connect on a three pointer until the fourth quarter.
  • The Owls were led by a career high 21 points from Stephanie D'Annolfo, who added six rebounds, six steals, and two blocks, but no other teammate had more than seven points.
  • Jordyn Nappi led the Warriors with 20 points, while Jill Ritrosky had 11 points and 10 boards and Lexis Foster chipped in 11 off the bench.
  • Eastern Connecticut State outrebounded Keene State 48-32, and was 24-for-29 from the free throw line.

 

First Half Highlights

  • Keene State simply could not get anything going, making just one of their first 10 field goal attempts while the Warriors jumped out to a 14-2 lead.
  • Foster's layup gave the Warriors an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Ritrosky scored inside with 5:33 left in the second quarter to push the lead out to 28-8.  D'Annolfo made two free throws with two seconds left as Keene State trailed 31-12 at halftime.


Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls still could not ignite their offense in the third quarter, but did get within 38-20 on D'Annolfo's layup with 2:22 left.
  • Keene State outscored Eastern Connecticut State 28-18 in the final period, briefly trimming the lead to 61-44 on a pair of quickfire threes from Emily McPadden, as the Owls finished the game on a 12-2 run to set the final score.
