Owl Women Secure No. 2 Seed With 54-40 Win Over Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Sarah Kober had 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Keene State College women's basketball team concluded the regular season with a 54-40 win over Rhode Island College at the Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

Playoff Permutations

  • The win secures the No. 2 seed in the LEC tournament for Keene State.  The Anchorwomen are locked in to the No. 7 seed, so the two teams will meet against on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. in a Little East quarterfinal game. 
  • The No. 2 seed is the highest for Keene State since 2007, when the Owls also finished second.  That year, Keene State reached the LEC title game for the second time, as well as in 2005.

Tale of the Tape

 

  • Sandi Purcell joined Kober in double-figures with a team high 14 points.  Lydia Vital chipped in eight points off the bench.
  • Keene State held the Anchorwomen to 29.4% shooting from the floor, including 3-of-22 from long range.
  • RIC's Devin Hill led all players with 17 points.  
  • The Owls held a 46-38 edge on the boards, including a 20-13 lead in offensive rebounds. 

 

First Half Highlights

  • Keene State held RIC to one first quarter field goal, taking an early 8-0 lead on a three pointer from Purcell.  
  • Another layup from Purcell made it 12-2 before Hill made three free throws to cut the lead to 12-5 after one.
  • Purcell and Emily McPadden sandwiched threes around two free throws from Lydia Vital to highlight a 12-4 run that pushed the Owl lead out to 24-9.
  • Vital and McPadden both knocked down threes in the final two minutes before Hill made one of her own with three seconds left in the half as Keene State led 30-16 at halftime. 

Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls picked up where they left off, outscoring the Anchorwomen 12-5 in the first five minutes of the third quarter.  Kelsey Cognetta fed Kober for a layup that made it 42-21.
  • Valerie Martin scored with 13 seconds left in the third quarter as Keene State led 49-23 after three.  
  • The Anchorwomen mounted a fourth quarter comeback, outscoring Keene State 17-5 in the final period, including the final 15 points of the game, but the deficit was too much.
