WINTER GARDEN, Fla.--The Keene State College softball team split its opening two games of the team's trip to Florida on Sunday, beating the University of New England 4-3 in 10 innings and falling to The College of New Jersey 7-0.

Records:

  • Keene State: 2-4
  • UNE: 2-1
  • TCNJ: 4-2

Up Next

  • Keene State plays Endicott College at 9 am and William Paterson at 11 am on Monday.

How It Happened - Game One

  • Keene State rallied to force extra innings in the top of the seventh inning to back Mariah Crisp's complete game, eight strikeout performance.
  • The Nor'Easters had opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Caroline Schoenbucher came around to score.
  • KSC could not get the offense going, getting just one runner past first base until the seventh, when Morgan Fallon led off with a single to right field.  Pinch hitter Olivia Indorf drew a walk to put the tying run in scoring position, and freshman Courtney Votto smacked a single to center field to plate Fallon and tie the score.
  • Crisp pitched out of trouble in the bottom half, getting Abby Lambert to pop out and striking out Erin Walsh to get out of a bases loaded, one-out jam.
  • KSC took the lead for the first time in the eighth on Stephanie Long's sacrifice fly, but the Nor'Easters tied the game in the bottom half on Schoenbucher's RBI triple.  An error gave KSC a 3-2 lead in the ninth, only to see UNE tie it again when Amanda Gosper doubled in Amanda Vallante.
  • The Owls went ahead for good in the top of the 10th, when Courtney Votto moved to second on Kristin Boduch's sacrifice and scored on Shae Crosby's groundout.   The Nor'Easters had the tying run on third in the bottom of the 10th inning in the form of Hannah Baldyga, but Crisp induced a fielder's choice from Schoenbucher, and Crosby cut down Baldyga at the plate to end it.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • Keene State again struggled at the plate, managing just three hits against TCNJ pitchers Nicole Frank and Sam Platt.  KSC also committed three errors and allowed six walks to the Lions.
  • TCNJ got all the runs they would need in the top of the fourth as Jenna Schwartz had an RBI and Jess Santelli and Gaby Bennett each knocked in two in the frame.
  • Santelli, who finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, drove in single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
  • Molly St. Germain took the loss for Keene State, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings.  KSC's best chance came in the when Kayla Votto led off with a single, moved to second on Heather Pelletier's sacrifice, and stole third with one out.  Fallon and St. Germain both grounded out to strand her 60 feet from home.
