ECAC Champs! Owls Stave Off Western New England, 56-54

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Tournament Most Outstanding Player Sarah Kober had yet another double-double as the Keene State College women's basketball team captured the 2016 ECAC New England Championship with a 56-54 win over Western New England University on Sunday afternoon.

Notable

  • Keene State finishes the season with a school record 24 wins and the program's second ECAC title.  KSC also won in 2010, when they defeated Plymouth State 69-68 in overtime.



Tale of the Tape

  • Keene State was led by 14 points and seven rebounds from Stephanie D'Annolfo, while Sandi Purcell had 12 points.  
  • Kober, who had a career high 19 points in the semifinal against Endicott, had 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Kelsey Cognetta, playing her final game in an Owl uniform, had six points, five rebounds, and five assists, while classmate Ryanne Williams had seven points, 10 boards, three blocks and three steals.
  • Western New England's Emily Anderson led all players with 17 points.  
  • Keene State had a strong 43-30 lead in rebounding, including 20-8 on the offensive glass. 

First Half Highlights

  • The Owls jumped out to an early 7-1 lead as Williams converted a three point play.  Western New England responded with seven straight points for ran 8-7 lead, but Cognetta fed Kober for a layup with 5:31 to go to put KSC back in front.
  • Chelsea Vujs scored with 2:11 left to give the Golden Bears a 16-11 lead, but the Owls got a three from Cognetta and a pair of free throws from Kober that tied the score before WNE's Dorothy O'Neill sank a free throw for a 17-16 lead after one quarter.
  • Keene State was poised to blow the game open, starting the second quarter on an 11-0 run.  Purcell and Cognetta each hit a three during that stretch as KSC led 27-17 with 6:13 left in the half.
  • Western New England hit back with 10 straight points of their own, tying the game at 27 at halftime when Sammie Battaini knocked down a three with seven seconds left in the half.

Second Half Highlights

  • The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter; Williams put KSC up 33-31 with a basket with 6:09 left, only to have Battaini respond with a three pointer that put the Golden Bears back in front.
  • D'Annolfo scored six straight points that gave Keene State a 39-34 advantage, and Purcell drained a trey with 35 seconds left in the third quarter for a 44-38 lead.
  • Western New England began the fourth quarter by outscoring Keene State 10-1, taking a 48-45 lead when Anderson completed a three point play, and knocked down a pair of free throws.
  • O'Neill made two foul shots with 2:48 to go for a 54-49 lead, but the Golden Bears did not score again.  Purcell drew KSC within two with her third three of the game, and Williams tied it with a layup with 58 seconds left.  Lydia Vital then sank two free throws with eight ticks on the clock and O'Neill's layup attempt fell short to force overtime.
