No. 20 Men's Lacrosse Sinks Vikings, 24-12

KEENE, N.H.--Berek Martichuski had four goals and four assists as the Keene State College men's lacrosse team eased to a 24-12 Little East Conference win over Salem State University on Tuesday night at Owl Athletic Complex.

  • No. 20 Keene State closes out the regular season by hosting Eastern Connecticut State on Senior Night on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m.  The Owls will clinch their eighth regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's LEC tournament with a win.
  • Salem State ends the regular season on the road against UMass Dartmouth, also on April 29 at 7 p.m.

Tale of the Tape

  • In addition to Martichuski's eight point game, Mitch Hale added four goals and two assists.  Tajh RussellFrank BacarellaTyler McKelvieJon NassifHunter Arnold, and Chris Morgan each recorded two goals.
  • The two goals for McKelvie included No. 200 of his career.  The senior scoring machine is now the 17th player in NCAA Division III history to reach the 200 goal plateau.
  • Mathew Howe played 37 minutes, making six saves.  Alex Sharp played 23 minutes and made one stop.
  • The Vikings were led by four goals and two assists from Ben Melaugh.

First Half Highlights

  • The two teams traded goals in the opening four minutes, as Hunter Arnold struck for Keene State and Bobby Bourgeois responded for the Vikings.
  • The Owls rattled off the next seven goals, including two from McKelvie, and one each from Tyler Reilly, Rob Hart, Arnold and Russell.
  • Craig Denehy scored the final goal of the first quarter, and Melaugh netted the first one of the second quarter to pull Salem State to within 8-3.
  • Keene State scored six of the next eight to open up a 14-5 lead.  Hale had two goals in that span, and Martichuski had a goal and two assists.
  • Jon Nassif scored with 28 seconds left in the first half as KSC led 16-7 at halftime.

Second Half Highlights

  • The goals never stopped flowing in the second half, as KSC scored the first four in the third quarter, including man-up goals by Bacarella and Morgan.
  • Salem State pulled within 10 at 20-10 with two goals from Jacob Scordato and one from Alex Pearsons, but would not get closer.  
  • Hale scored on a man-down play with 3:59 to go and Martichuski closed the scoring with 1:55 left.
