Field Hockey Suffers 6-0 Loss To No. 18 Amherst

KEENE, N.H.--No. 18 Amherst College scored three times in a span of 15 minutes in the second half en route to a 6-0 win over Keene State College on Wednesday night at Owl Athletic Complex.

Tale of the Tape

  • Amherst dominated on the offensive end, outshooting Keene State 23-3 and holding Keene State withouth a shot on goal.
  • Amherst also had a 13-1 edge in penalty corners.
  • KSC goalie Gwen Thayer made 13 saves, while Marita Brothers and Kendal Brown each had a defensive save for the Owls.

First Half Highlights 

  • The Owls and Amherst traded shots in the early going, as Thayer made a save from Laura Swartzman, and Sami Smith poked an effort wide in the 10th minute.
  • Amherst called a timeout in the 17th minute, and was on the board soon after.  Sarah Culhane scrambled home her first of the year with several players in the box in the 20th minute.
  • Three minutes later, Amherst doubled the lead.  Keene State was whistled for a penalty stroke, and Caroline Fiore managed to just get it past Thayer, who guessed the right way but could not stop the shot from trickling past her.


Second Half Highlights

  • Amherst made it 3-0 early in the second half on a goal by Schwartzman.  Marita Brothers and Kendal Brown had defensive saves 40 seconds apart to keep the Owls in the game.
  • Amherst added two more goals 95 seconds apart, with tallies from Turnbull and Mary Grace Cronin, and Turnbull added her second and Amherst's sixth with two minutes remaining.
