Owls Put Nine Past Vikings In LEC Win

Box Score

SALEM, Mass.--Sophomore Erica Stauffer scored four goals as the Keene State College field hockey team posted a 9-0 win over Salem State University in Little East Conference action on Tuesday night.

Records

  • Keene State: 6-2, 3-0 LEC
  • Salem State: 1-5, 0-4 LEC

Up Next

  • Keene State returns home to host Trinity College (CT) on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
  • The Vikings are off until Saturday, when they travel to Framingham State for a 7 p.m. start.

Tale of the Tape

  • Keene State dominated in every facet, holding a whopping 35-1 edge in shots and a 29-0 advantage in shots on goal.  Keene State also held a 13-1 lead in penalty corners and goalies Gwendolyn Thayer and Jordan LaRaus were not required to make a save.
  • Stauffer netted four times, falling one short of the school record for goals in a game.  Three different people have scored five in a game, most recently Elizabeth Coffin against Worcester State in 2010.  The four goals nearly doubled Stauffer's previous season total of six.
  • Sami Smith added two more goals, while Kayla Renaud, Casi Smith, and Julia Babbitt each netted one.  Renaud, Hannah Cook, and Marita Brothers all had assists.

First Half Highlights

  • Smith got the Owls up and running less than 10 minutes into the game, putting in an unassisted tally with 9:20 on the clock.
  • The senior doubled her total for the night off a pass from Renaud in the 27th minute.
  • Keene State could have added more in the first half, as Stauffer was denied by Salem State goalie Carolyn Woodin.   Smith tested Woodin again in the final minutes of the half.

Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls picked up where they left off in the second half, peppering the Vikings goal with shots before Stauffer got her first of the night in the 43rd minute for a 3-0 lead.
  • Renaud made it 4-0 six minutes later with an assists from Brothers following a penalty corner.
  • Three goals in three minutes put the game well out of reach, and Stauffer had all three.  She took a pass from Cook to make it 5-0 in the 55th minute, and completed the hat-trick 1:01 later.  Another goal in the 58th minute made it 7-0.
  • Keene State was not done scoring, as Babbitt added a goal in the 66th minute and Casi Smith scored her first of the year in the 68th.
