AMHERST, Mass. - No. 17 Amherst College scored five goals in the second quarter and went on to beat the Keene State College field hockey team 9-0 on Wednesday evening at Gooding Field.

How It Happened

The Mammoths, who moved from No. 20 to No. 17 in the most recent NFHCA poll released Tuesday, had eight different players score as they tallied two goals in the opening seven-plus minutes and cruised from there.  Nina Bruno had a pair of shots, both on target, and three others had one, but KSC had just six shots in the game overall.  Owl goalkeeper Rachel Loseby made four stops in the opening 10 minutes, but Amherst already had a 2-0 lead after Natalie Hobbs scored in the fifth minute and Caroline Donahue at 7:16 after a follow up of her own shot that was saved by Loseby.  The Mammoths led 2-0 at the end of the opening quarter and ran away after scoring five more times in the second.  Laura Schwartzman found the back of the cage just 1:24 into the period, and Jackie D'Alleva did the same off a feed from Franny Daniels just 22 seconds later, making it 4-0.  Loseby cintinued to do all she could, denying six more bids from the home team over the ensuing six minutes, but Amherst scored on a penalty stroke goal in the 24th minute from Anna Agathis to extend the lead further.

KSC had a brief flurry right after, as Bruno and Kelsey Roberts had several chances in close, but Mammoths goalkeeper Emilie Flamme made four straight saves, two on Bruno bids, to keep the Owls off the board.

Leading 7-0 after the opening 30 minutes, Amherst added one goal in both the third and fourth quarters.  Sage Geyer tipped home Beth Williamson's shot following a corner insertion at the 31:14 mark and, with just 1:16 to go, Franny Daniels scored 11 seconds after Jordan LaRaus made one of her career-high 14 saves.

Loseby (1-3) made 12 saves on 16 shots in 23:04 and LaRaus 14 stops on 19 shots in the next 36:56 for KSC, while Flamme improved to 2-1 for Amherst after keeping out five shots in the shutout.

Penalty Strokes

• Amherst has won nine of 11 all-time meetings.
• It was the Owls' first matchup against a nationally ranked opponent this season.  They are also scheduled to take on, based on the most recent NFHCA rankings, No. 15 Trinity College (Conn.) next Thursday and No. 18 Babson College on November 2.  KSC had four such matchups in 2018.
• Loseby fell five saves shy of her single-game career best of 17 set in 2017 against Trinity (Conn.).
