How it Happened
The Spartans took the lead from the opening kickoff, as Bella Varisco lofted a ball over the top of the KSC defense for Rylee Nichols to run on to and score past Keene State goalie
Abbie Terrinca. The goal woke up the Owl offense, as
Kayleigh Marshall,
Allison Yanski, and
Elizabeth Kopicko all fired shots on net, only to see them saved by Castleton goalie Alex Benfatti.
Terrinca made a pair of stops, first on Brytnee Moore, then on Nichols in the 20th minute, before
Maya Baker,
Alyssa Wilcox, and
Kayleigh Marshall tested Benfatti again. Chase Livesey doubled the Castleton lead in the 29th minute, with a strike from just outside the area that beat Terrinca at the near post.
The Owls ratcheted up the pressure in the second half, as
Alex Kennedy's shot was blocked following a corner kick, and Skinner's shot was saved by Benfatti in the 73rd minute. Keene State finally broke through in the 77th minute through Skinner's first career goal.
Maya Baker laid the ball back for Skinner, who angled a spectacular goal past the dive of Benfatti into the upper left hand corner. Baker had the Owls' final attempt in the 80th minute, but the Spartans ran out the clock.
Keene State outshot the Spartans 15-13, and 12-6 in shots on net. Terrinca made four stops.
