Eastern Connecticut Upends Women's Soccer With Late Goal

Kayleigh Marshall Nets Third of Season in 2-1 Defeat

KEENE, N.H.--Alexie Root scored a pair of goals to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Keene State College in Little East Conference women's soccer action at Dr. Ron Butcher Field on Saturday afternoon.

Records
  • Keene State: 3-6-1, 1-2 LEC
  • Eastern Conn. State: 4-4-1, 1-2-1 LEC

How it Happened

The Owls struck first through Kayleigh Marshall, who netted her third goal of the season in the 18th minute of the game.  Marshall received the ball on the wing and looped it over the outstretched arm of ECSU 'keeper Alexis Tyrrell to the far post.

Root netted her first to knot the game up with just over 10 minutes left in the half.   Holding off a KSC defender, the Warriors' midfielder dribbled into the box and beat KSC starter Abbie Terrinca from close range.

The Warriors, who outshot Keene State 7-2 in the second half, got the game winner with seven minutes to go;   Root latched on to a ball in space and chipped it up and over the head of the on-rushing Terrinca.     Victoria Reynolds had the best chance for the Owls in the 86th minute, but Tyrrell made the save.

Inside the Box
  • This was the third straight contest between the teams that was decided by a single goal;  seven of the last eight meetings have been one-goal affairs.
  • With one-third of the league season completed, the Owls find themselves just outside the final berth for the LEC tournament; Keene State has three points, just one behind ECSU for the final spot.  The Owls do have a game in hand on all league opponents and are still to face UMass Dartmouth and Rhode Island College, the two teams below them in the standings.

Up Next
  • The Owls have a quick turnaround, as they will travel to Curry College on Monday, October 4, for a 6 p.m. start.
  • The Warriors are off until October 6, when they will travel to Connecticut College.
