KEENE, N.H. –
Hailey Patridge,
Kirsten Dinsmore, and
Kaylin Voudren all scored the first goals of their Keene State College field hockey careers as the Owls saw seven different people find the back of the cage and went on to a 9-2 rout of Castleton University in a Little East Conference matchup at Owl Athletic Complex Wednesday night, moving within one win of the league's regular season title.
Records
- Keene State: 9-10, 9-2 LEC
- Castleton: 6-11, 4-7 LEC
How It Happened
Somewhat remarkably given the score, KSC scored just once in the opening 24 minutes of the game, but then proceeded to score four times in less than 10 minutes spanning halftime and eight times in 31 minutes overall as they moved into sole possession of first place in the LEC after Westfield State University lost in overtime to Salem State University. The Owls can win their first regular season league title in five years and clinch home field throughout the conference tournament by winning at Westfield Friday night. KSC has beaten the Owls 12 consecutive times and nine of 10 all-time in Massachusetts, though eight of those matchups at Alumni Field were one-goal decisions.

Tonight, Keene State established a territorial edge quickly and clearly, piling up 13 corners in the game's first 30 minutes while outshooting the Spartans 11-1 in that span. CU goalkeeper Hannah Frittenburg kept her team in the game on the scoreboard early, making four stops in the opening frame including a pair on
Demetria Gonzalez and one on
Molly Murray's second penalty stroke of the evening. Patridge putting home a rebound following a corner was her only blemish initially, but the Owls blew the game open right before halftime by scoring three times in a little over five minutes.
Maggie Cahoon, after being honored on Senior Night before the game, made it a 2-0 lead after she was in the right place at the right time on a scramble following a corner.
Ellie Hunkins tacked on another in the 26th minute, tipping home
Irini Stefanakos' redirection of Gonzalez's blast, before Stefanakos herself put the Owls up 4-0 with 31 seconds to go in the opening half after she was right there to slot home a centering pass that Frittenburg attempted to kick away.
Nothing much changed after the halftime break, as Hunkins tied for the team lead in goals (14) by cashing in another centering feed from Gonzalez just 3:33 in for the Owls' fifth goal. Castleton broke the shutout 23 seconds later on Emily Harris' 26th goal of the season, but KSC was right back at it less than two minutes later when Stefanakos again made something happen, forcing a turnover before sending a perfect pass to Dinsmore for her career-first tally.
Grace Taylor scored for the sixth time in the last eight games to make it 7-1 in the 40th minute, and Keene State still was not yet done. Patridge blasted home a corner feed from the top of the circle to complete a multi-goal game with 7:58 to go before Voudren found the back of the cage for the first time in her young career to help the Owls equal a season-high with nine goals in a game.
Victoria Watson (2-0) got the start in the KSC cage and made one stop.
Ashley Enis saved one shot in the fourth quarter. Frittenburg (3-9) took the loss for Castleton, who suffered their third most lopsided defeat this season. Their last four losses had all come by just one goal.
Penalty Strokes
- The Owls have scored 29 goals in their last five home games and are averaging four per game overall at Owl Athletic Complex, where they are 6-4 this season.
- KSC outshot the Spartans 26-4 and had a whopping 21-2 edge in corner chances.
- Keene State leads the all-time series 13-2 and has scored five or more goals against Castleton in a third of those games.
Up Next
- As mentioned, the Owls can wrap up the LEC regular season title with a win at Westfield State on Friday (October 29) at 7:00 p.m. If Westfield wins, KSC would slip to at least third and could fall to as low as fifth depending on results around the league.
- Castleton has their regular season finale at home against Bridgewater State University (5-10, 3-7 LEC) on the same day (4:00 p.m.). The Spartans entered tonight in the race for the No. 8 and final playoff spot in the standings, but will be eliminated from the conference race if Western Connecticut State University beats last place Fitchburg State University in a rescheduled game tomorrow night.
