Mbungu’s Hat Trick Helps Men’s Soccer Beat Castleton 4-3

CASTLETON, Vt. – Senior forward Mbambi Mbungu became the first Keene State College men's soccer player in exactly six years to score a hat trick as the Owls defeated Castleton University 4-3 Wednesday at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Records
  • Keene State: 5-7-1, 3-2-0 LEC
  • Castleton: 3-7-2, 1-3-1 LEC

How it Happened
Castleton struck first at 21:44 when sophomore defender Jacob Barth scored to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Just 16 seconds later, Mbungu connected with a strike from about 25 yards away from the net to tie the match at one. The forward was not done yet. Mbungu scored his second goal at 25:26 after maneuvering around a defender to create a shooting lane and then shooting the ball into the upper-left corner of the net, giving the Owls a 2-1 lead.

A different player would continue the scoring for Keene State. At 43:42, junior defender Carlos Barrera scored his first goal as a member of the Owls. He scored after kicking a loose ball that bounced off sophomore midfielder Caleb Harmon into the net to give KSC a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.

Castleton made it a 3-2 game at 68:11 with a goal by sophomore forward Adolphe Alfani. It wasn't until 83:16 when Mbungu scored his third goal of the night to make it a 4-2 Keene State lead. While Castleton got another goal from Gonzalaiz Arakaza at 84:00, the Owls held on for its second straight victory.
