KEENE, N.H. –
Chase Lambert finished with a goal and an assist while her classmate
Maggie Cahoon added a tally of her own as the Keene State College field hockey team rode two goals in the opening 10:42 and a stifling defensive effort to a 3-1 victory over Westfield State University on Senior Day at the Owl Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
Records
- Keene State: 10-9, 9-3 LEC
- Westfield State: 10-8, 7-5 LEC
How It Happened
The Owls had dropped four spots in the standings after a loss Wednesday night on the road at Castleton University, but reclaimed two of those with today's win and results around the league over the past two nights, and will finish with the No. 4 seed in the conference's regular season slate. Plymouth State University, which was hurt (and Keene State helped) by Framingham State University's upset of Fitchburg State University Friday night, now awaits the Owls in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday night, a rematch of a game won convincingly, 4-1, by KSC on September 27 in the regular season. It has been a rollercoaster of a campaign for the Owls, who have never been more than two games above .500 at any point, nor more than one game under .500. Regardless, over the next week, they will look to find consistency and are aiming for their league-best 15th Little East Conference tournament title and first NCAA tournament appearance since 2018.
All four goals of Saturday's contest occurred in the opening 24:09, with Keene State opening a 2-0 lead in only 10:42 and mostly cruising from there, almost entirely extinguishing any offense by Westfield State. The visitors were held to just two shots total, both in the second quarter, and after scoring in the 18th minute to chop their two-goal deficit in half, mustered their last shot of the contest at the 18:37 mark, which was saved by KSC goalkeeper
Clara Gorman.
Maggie Cahoon got that goal right back less than six minutes later when
Paula Vasiliadis found her to make it a 3-1 game. Keene State carried that advantage into the break, and despite recording only five shots in the second half, was in complete command thanks to ball possession and their defense, which held Westfield shotless over the final 41 minutes of the game and to their lowest output of the season.
The Owls started fast, scoring first for the 11th time in 19 games when Lambert found
Demetria Gonzalez for her fourth goal – all since October 2 – just 4:19 in. Lambert then tacked on her own tally in the 11th minute and KSC was well on their way from there, finishing 6-4 on their home turf this season.
Clara Gorman picked up the win, making one save. Paige Reisman (44:56) and Emma Gniadek each played in the Westfield cage, with the latter stopping six of eight shots in the defeat.
Penalty Strokes
- The Owls had a 13-2 advantage in shots (9-2 on goal) and 10-3 in penalty corners.
- Keene State has dominated the series, winning 27 of 28 meetings and the last 14 in a row.
Up Next
- As mentioned, KSC will host Plymouth State (11-5, 9-3 LEC) in a Little East Conference tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday (November 1) at 6:00 p.m. The winner will take on the victor from the matchup between No. 1 seed University of Southern Maine and No. 8 seed Framingham State University on Thursday in the semifinals. Keene State was in danger of having to go on the road for an LEC quarterfinal for the first time ever, but a win today coupled with Framingham's 2-0 final over Fitchburg last night provided the Owls at least one more home game in 2022.
- Westfield State visits No. 2 seed Worcester State University (13-6, 10-2 LEC) on the same day for a 4:00 p.m. start. The Lancers won the regular season meeting 3-1 and have won four straight entering the postseason, though did trail in each of their last two contests against Bridgewater State University and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, neither of whom qualified for the postseason tournament.
