Despite 2-0 Loss, Men’s Soccer Secures Spot in LEC Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite the Keene State College men's soccer team losing to Rhode Island College 2-0 Saturday at Alumni Field, the Owls were still able to qualify for the upcoming Little East Conference tournament.

In their final regular season match for 2022, the Owls fell behind 1-0 at 13:42 when senior forward Jonathan Oliveira took the ball just from beyond midfield and sprinted past multiple Keene State defenders before scoring his fourth goal of the season. RIC's other goal came at 70:26 when senior midfielder Brandon Ramos scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick after sophomore midfielder Christion Restrepo drew a foul from inside the box.
 
Keene State ultimately put up three shots on goal throughout the match. Two of them came within minutes of each other in the first half. At 30:53, senior midfielder Declan Coughlin took a pass from senior forward Mbambi Mbungu inside the box and quickly shot the ball, only to be denied by junior goalkeeper Jake Reed. Then at 32:44, freshman midfielder Amlyl Aitdowd sent a header towards the net, but the ball was caught by Reed. The final shot on goal came from freshman forward Nick Henao Vasquez at 56:51 when he tried to score with a header off a pass from near midfield, but Reed came up with the save.

  • Keene State now has a record of 24-6-2 against Rhode Island College.
  • After not recording a shot for much of the season, Aitdowd now has five shots in his last two games, including two that were on goal.
  • This is the fifth straight full season where the Owls qualified for the LEC tournament dating back to 2017.

Keene State will compete as the No. 6 seed in the LEC tournament. The Owls will take on No. 3 Eastern Connecticut State University on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Keene State lost to ECSU 3-2 in the only prior meeting between the two teams this season on Oct. 1.
