PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Keene State College men's soccer team began its 2022 season with a 2-0 loss against Plattsburgh Friday at the school's Field House Soccer/Lacrosse Complex as part of the Cardinal Classic.
Freshman forward
Nick Henao Vasquez had an impressive debut for the Owls, leading all players on the pitch with three shots on goal. Senior forward
Mbambi Mbungu also recorded a shot on goal while sophomore goalkeeper
Regan Racicot made two saves for the Owls.
In the first meeting between these two teams since 1981, Plattsburgh scored both of its goals early in the first half off corners. The first came at the 7:44 mark when sophomore defender John Hayes knocked in a loose ball for Plattsburgh's first goal of the season. Nearly four minutes later at 11:31, junior defender Jack Healy picked up a goal with a header in front of the net.
KSC's best chance in the first half came at the 21:44 mark, when Mbungu got a shot off toward the center of the net, only for it to be stopped by Plattsburgh sophomore goalkeeper Teddy Healy. Keene State would have more quality chances in the second half, courtesy of Vasquez.
Vasquez had two breakaway opportunities for the Owls throughout the half, getting a shot off both times. However, Teddy Healy made the save each instance for the Cardinals, allowing Plattsburgh to pick up the win.
Keene State wraps up its appearance in the Cardinal Classic on Saturday at Clarkson. The match begins at 3 p.m.
