How it Happened
In a rematch of the close 18-17 game between these two teams just nine days prior on April 25, sophomore attacker Julian Duque made sure the Wolves got off to a quick start by scoring the first two goals of the contest. Junior midfielder
Colby Quiet responded for the Owls by scoring at 2:32 to bring KSC within one. WestConn would soon get another goal from senior midfielder Trey Aronow to go up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Western Connecticut State then added a goal from senior midfielder Stephen Cicchetti to extend its lead to 4-2 at 11:09 in the second. Keene State then began to make a comeback. After fifth year defender
Haeden Finerty caused a turnover on the other end of the field, sophomore midfielder
Jeff Wiedenfeld sent the ball near the crease for junior attacker
Andrew Miller. Miller fired in his first goal of the night to make it 4-2 WestConn at 5:31. Just over a minute later at 4:07, senior midfielder
Max Thurston got the Owls back within one with a goal. KSC went into halftime trailing 4-3.
The second half featured more scoring from both sides. WestConn got the first two goals of the third quarter from sophomore attacker Matt Sweeney and Cicchetti. In response, the Owls scored the next three goals to tie the game at six. The tallies came from Thurston, senior attacker
Cooper Cioffi and senior midfielder
Nathan Sickles. After that, the Wolves took control of the game and never looked back by scoring seven unanswered goals to go up 13-6 in the fourth quarter. Duque scored three goals during that run for the Wolves, while Sweeney added two goals and an assist. Keene State tried to make a comeback as Quiet and Miller each scored with the Owls up a man to bring it to 13-8 with 39 seconds remaining in regulation. But the Owls ran out of time in the game, and therefore, its season.
