KEENE, N.H. – First year forward
Grace Seabury scored 16:51 into the game to help the Keene State College field hockey team strike first on Tuesday night against nationally No. 10 ranked Amherst College, but the Mammoths answered a minute later, and that proved to be the start of seven consecutive goals as they went on to a 9-3 win over the Owls on Tuesday night at the Owl Athletic Complex.
Records
- Keene State: 3-2
- No. 10 Amherst: 2-1
How It Happened
Remarkably in a game that featured 12 goals combined between the teams, nobody scored for nearly the opening third of the game – the entire first quarter and the first 1:51 of the second. However, once the scoring came, it was fast and furious. The Owls struck first when a pair of newcomers – and Graces – Bazin and Seabury teamed up for nice fastbreak goal. Bazin, a University of New England transfer, carried up the left side and into the circle before passing past Amherst goalie Sara Nidus and defender Olivia Tennant to Seabury, who was able to tap it in for a 1-0 lead and her first collegiate goal.
The game turned after that, as the Mammoths responded with a goal from Paige DiBiase less than a minute later, and then took a 2-1 lead in the 25th minute on a goal from Muffie Mazambani, who wound up scoring a hat trick over the final six minutes of the half. Sam Maynard also scored in that time frame – the first of her own three goal evening. KSC trailed 5-1 at halftime.
Amherst won each of the final two quarters 2-1. Maynard scored twice in less than two minutes midway through the third to push the visitors' lead to six before
Kalina Piasecki got one back in the 43rd minute. Bazin made it 8-3 at the 53:15 mark, adding to the impressive start to her Owl career.
Clara Gorman started in the KSC cage and made eight stops in the first half, while
Molly Edmark entered in the second half and stopped seven. Nidus did not make any saves in 45 minutes, and nor did Grace Puchalski in the final 15 minutes, with the duo combining to allow three goals.
Penalty Strokes
- KSC had been shut out in seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams and scored one goal in 2018 in a 5-1 loss. The last time they scored multiple goals in the series came in a 3-2 road loss in Massachusetts in 2013. They had not scored more than two since winning 4-1 in 2002.
- Bazin has a goal in four consecutive games (and added an assist tonight). In that span, she has fired off 18 shots (13 SOG).
- Stefanakos had a four-game goal streak snapped.
