Men’s Golf Battles at Brett Williamson Invitational

Owls Shoot a 351, Tie Worcester State in Seventh at 10-Team Event

Results

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Caden Capaldo shot an 81 to pace the Keene State College men's golf team as they competed at the Brett Williamson Invitational on Wednesday at the Tekoa Country Club.

As a team, the Owls finished in a seventh-place tie with Worcester State University, shooting a 351.  In addition to Capaldo, KSC also got rounds of 86 from Sean McCaffrey, 91 from Colin O'Brien, 93 from Ben Fecteau in his first career collegiate match, and 94 from Cade Williams.

Capaldo was three over after nine (shooting a 39), notching a birdie on the Par 5 fourth hole and parring five others.  On the back nine, he parred five different holes but was brought down by a trio of double bogeys.  O'Brien recorded a birdie of his own on the seventh hole in his round.

As a group, the Owls combined for a 31 on the Par 4 tenth hole (6, 9, 6, 4, 6) and the same score on the 491-yard Par 5 No. 14.

The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Matt Gover was the individual medalist at the event with a 72 (+1).  Eastern Connecticut State University won it as a team with a 315, 10 strokes ahead of MCLA and New England College.  Dean College was in fourth with a 327.

"It was tough conditions, but we need to learn as a team how to keep a bad score to the mid-80s," said Keene State head coach Jeff Timmer.  "If our team was able to figure out how to cut five strokes off our team score today (1.3 strokes per player), we would have tied for fifth rather than finishing eighth. It is important to not give up, because it turns out every team had a difficult day today."

Gover shot a two-under 34 in an impressive opening nine holes of his round before going three over on the back nine with five pars and three bogeys.

The team winner ECSU received scores of 76 from Chris Davidson, 79 from Matt Orefice, 80 from Ashton Lewis and Jacob Napolitan, and an 85 from Cal Angelo.

Keene State hosts their home invitational at the Keene Country Club on Friday, September 29.
